Iraq Kirkuk
Umayyad-Abbasid-Seljuer Atabeg-Ottoman
Situated on a mound by Hasan Creek, the castle is considered to be the first core of the city of Kirkuk. it dates back to Assyrian times. In addition to many historical buildings, the most remarkable examples of the houses of the city of Kirkuk can be found here. One of a kind with its meandering streets and picturesque location, Kirkuk witnessed a great massacre in 1997. Around 700 houses and some historical buildings were destroyed.
The castle has many important buildings, such as Gok Kumbet, Dalyan Prophet Mosque, Great Mosque and a small Covered Bazaar. Most interesting examples of traditional houses, such as Tayfur House and Mustafa Aga House are inside the castle. Neglected and ruined, the castle needs to be restored as the symbol of the city and an important cultural heritage.
