The castle is located in the Alborz Mountains, near Qazvin, within the boundaries of the province of Tabriz. it was one of the strongest and most impregnable castles of the Middle Ages. The castle, which originally belonged the Seljuk Turks, later became a military post used by Hasan Sabbah and his strongmen during his clashes with Malik Shah. The castle was in use up until the Mangol invasions. Medieval historians mention the existence of a valuable library created in the castle by Hasan Sabbah. This library was, unfortunately, burned during the Mangol invasions.

The castle is situated on steep, rocky terrain. Several areas, reserved tor the commander of the fortress and the military corps, were discovered during the archaeological work carried out in the castle.
